Why Is an Aquatic Treadmill Especially Helpful After a Stroke?

Practice the First Steps Safely — Even Before Standing Is Stable

Water supports 50–80% of body weight, allowing patients who cannot yet stand on land to begin stepping practice in water with a reduced risk of falling. A physical therapist supervises the entire session.

Promotes Neuroplasticity Through Repetitive Movement

Water allows longer and more frequent repetition with less discomfort. Consistent repetitive practice is a key component ofNeuroplasticity — the more the patient practices, the more opportunities the brain has to develop new neural pathways.

Ideal During the First 3–6 Months After a Stroke

The first 3–6 months are an important period for neurological recovery. Starting water-based gait training early helps patients make the most of this opportunity. Explore theComprehensive Stroke Rehabilitation Programat KIN.

Reduces Fear of Falling — Helping Patients Train with Greater Confidence

Many stroke patients are too afraid of falling to practice walking. Water provides natural support, helping patients feel more confident, attempt new steps and participate more fully in training.

How Soon After a Stroke Can a Patient Begin Using the Aquatic Treadmill?

Training may begin once the neurological condition is stable, commonly 1–4 weeks after the stroke depending on severity. A physical therapist assesses the patient before every session. Please bring the physician’s report or brain-imaging results when available.

Can Patients Who Cannot Stand Independently Use It?

Yes. Water supports 50–80% of body weight, so patients who are not yet stable on land may still begin gait training in water. A physical therapist remains present and adjusts the water level for each individual.

How Is an Aquatic Treadmill Different from a Hydrotherapy Pool?

An aquatic treadmill is a private water chamber with precise control of speed and water depth, making it particularly suitable for gait training. A hydrotherapy pool is better suited to broader movements. KIN offers both options, and our team can recommend the most appropriate approach.

How Often Should It Be Used, and How Long Is Each Session?

Three sessions per week are generally recommended during the first 3–6 months after a stroke to make use of the neuroplasticity window. Each session lasts approximately 30–45 minutes, and the physical therapist designs the program according to the patient’s actual condition.
