SLEEP TEST A sleep study assesses sleep quality under normal sleeping conditions by measuring the following:
Breathing: airflow through the nose and mouth is measured together with movements of the chest and abdominal muscles used in breathing. This helps determine whether breathing pauses occur, what type they are, and how abnormal or potentially serious they may be.
Snoring sounds: the test assesses how frequently and loudly a person snores, whether snoring continues throughout sleep, and which sleeping positions are associated with snoring.
Sleeping position: the test examines how snoring or abnormal breathing changes in different sleeping positions.
Blood oxygen saturation: the test measures oxygen levels during sleep to help assess whether the brain or heart may be receiving insufficient oxygen and the possible severity of the condition.
Heart rate: the test measures the heart rate during sleep.
