Occupational Therapy

“Small but Mighty Basket” and Category Words

This Week’s Activity: “Small but Mighty Basket” and Category Words

A group activity led by an occupational therapist at KIN Rehabilitation & Homecare, designed to support rehabilitation through occupational therapy, with emphasis on hand function, fine motor skills, creativity, cognitive engagement, and attention during the activity.

Why Is Fine Motor Development Important for Patients?

Fine motor skills involve the small muscles of the hands, fingers, and thumbs that are essential for everyday activities such as grasping objects, using a spoon, drawing, writing, and fastening buttons. Weakness or reduced control in these muscles can make daily tasks more difficult and may reduce independence. Appropriate training can help patients practise the skills needed for self-care and participation in family life. The activities used should be selected according to each person’s abilities and rehabilitation goals.

Occupational therapycan support fine motor development through purposeful activities. Occupational therapists may also use word games, categorisation tasks, and other cognitive activities to encourage thinking skills. These activities can provide enjoyment and relaxation while also practising attention, visual processing, listening, memory, and social participation. Individual outcomes may vary.

Activity Objectives

1. To practise arm and hand function.
2. To encourage completing an activity in sequence.
3. To support short-term memory.
4. To encourage interaction and participation with others.
5. To promote alertness and active engagement.
