Scenes From the 2023 Patient-Transfer Training at KIN - Rehabilitation & Homecare
KIN - Rehabilitation & Homecare conducts quarterly patient-transfer training for caregivers and physical-therapy assistants, followed by competency assessments.
Safe transfer of a bed-bound patient from a bed to a wheelchair requires an individual assessment of consciousness, sitting balance, strength, pain, medical condition, and ability to follow instructions. Some patients may be able to sit in a wheelchair with appropriate assistance rather than remaining in bed continuously. Changing position may help reduce prolonged pressure, support comfort, and encourage interaction with caregivers. However, transfers should be carried out only by trained personnel using suitable techniques, equipment, and the appropriate number of assistants for the patient’s condition.
Correct transfer techniques are essential for both the patient and the person providing assistance. Staff should have the knowledge and practical experience needed to plan and perform transfers safely. Appropriate techniques can help reduce the risk of falls, skin injury, pain, and other complications. Therefore, all personnel involved should receive suitable training in lifting, repositioning, and transferring patients according to each individual’s condition, while also protecting staff from musculoskeletal injury.
