Simple Exercises for People Recovering from Hip Surgery
Presented by Praveena Saensuwan, PT

Physical therapy and rehabilitation after hip surgery should be planned according to the type of operation, surgical approach, weight-bearing status, medical condition, and the surgeon’s instructions.
Appropriate rehabilitation may support mobility, independence, strength, and recovery while helping reduce some postoperative complications. Recovery speed varies between individuals and cannot be guaranteed. Some exercises may be performed independently only after they have been taught and approved by the rehabilitation team. During approximately weeks 1–6, the program may gradually focus on leg strength, walking, transfers, and safe movement in bed, depending on the person’s condition and surgical plan.

Hip Precautions That May Be Prescribed After Surgery

1. Some patients may be instructed not to bend the hip beyond 90 degrees or bring the operated leg across the body. These restrictions depend on the surgical approach and must not be assumed for everyone.
2. When side-lying, a pillow between the legs may be recommended if approved by the surgical or rehabilitation team.
3. Avoid crossing the legs if this is part of the prescribed hip precautions.
4. Avoid deep squatting, very low chairs, or bending down to pick objects from the floor when these movements are restricted. Use an appropriate aid or ask for assistance.

These are general examples for people recovering from hip surgery. Follow the individual instructions provided by the surgeon and physical therapist. Stop exercising and seek advice if there is sudden severe pain, a new leg-length change, the hip feels displaced, the wound becomes red or drains, fever develops, or calf swelling, chest pain, or shortness of breath occurs.
