Hip Precautions That May Be Prescribed After Surgery
1. Some patients may be instructed not to bend the hip beyond 90 degrees or bring the operated leg across the body. These restrictions depend on the surgical approach and must not be assumed for everyone.
2. When side-lying, a pillow between the legs may be recommended if approved by the surgical or rehabilitation team.
3. Avoid crossing the legs if this is part of the prescribed hip precautions.
4. Avoid deep squatting, very low chairs, or bending down to pick objects from the floor when these movements are restricted. Use an appropriate aid or ask for assistance.
These are general examples for people recovering from hip surgery. Follow the individual instructions provided by the surgeon and physical therapist. Stop exercising and seek advice if there is sudden severe pain, a new leg-length change, the hip feels displaced, the wound becomes red or drains, fever develops, or calf swelling, chest pain, or shortness of breath occurs.
