Four Types of Exercise That May Help Improve Movement
For people living with Parkinson’s disease
An individualized exercise program may include:
1. Flexibility and stretching exercises
2. Strength and resistance exercises
3. Aerobic and endurance exercises
4. Balance, gait, and movement-control training
Parkinson’s symptoms, fitness, balance, medication response, and daily function vary between individuals. Exercise should therefore be selected and progressed individually with advice from a physician and physical therapist or another appropriately trained rehabilitation professional.
Safety: Start at a level matched to current ability. Use a stable support, supervision, or an assistive device when there is a risk of falling. Some people may exercise more safely during the part of the medication cycle when movement is easier. Stop and seek advice for chest pain, marked shortness of breath, faintness, a fall, or a sudden change in symptoms.
