Happy Songkran at KIN Rehab
Celebrating Thai New Year With Bingo, Lucky-Egg Prizes, and a Traditional Water-Pouring Ceremony
When we think of Songkran, we often picture happiness, laughter, water celebrations, reunions with loved ones, and opportunities to show respect to elders. KIN Rehab shared this warm festive atmosphere through special activities designed to be suitable and inclusive for both service users and staff at the center.
Bingo: Fun With Numbers
The “Bingo” activity may appear to be a simple recreational game, but it can offer more than entertainment—particularly in a rehabilitation and health-care setting such as KIN Rehab.
1. Supporting Attention and Memory
Bingo involves observation, listening, number recognition, and timely responses. These demands may support attention, short-term memory, and cognitive engagement, making the activity suitable as part of a broader neurological or cognitive rehabilitation programme when adapted to each participant.
2. Encouraging Interaction and Reducing Isolation
Some people undergoing rehabilitation experience loneliness or social isolation. Playing bingo with others creates opportunities to talk, greet one another, form new friendships, and share laughter with staff and fellow participants in a natural and relaxed way.
3. Building Confidence and Positive Motivation
Whenever someone calls out “Bingo!”, laughter, applause, and smiles fill the room. Being able to participate, complete the game, or win a round can provide encouragement, strengthen confidence, and support motivation during rehabilitation.
Lucky-Egg Prize Draw
Another popular Songkran activity at KIN Rehab was the “Lucky-Egg Prize Draw”, featuring a variety of small prizes such as snacks, personal items, decorations, and special gifts prepared by the team.
1. Anticipation That Encourages Positive Emotions
Because participants do not know which prize is hidden inside each egg, the activity creates light-hearted anticipation and surprise. This playful uncertainty may increase enjoyment, engagement, and positive mood while helping participants feel more relaxed.
2. Practising Hand Use and Movement
Picking an egg from a basket, opening it, and holding a prize involve hand use, reaching, grasping, and coordinated movement. When appropriately adapted, these actions may support fine- and gross-motor practice for older adults or people experiencing movement difficulties.
3. Strengthening Participation in the KIN Rehab Community
The lucky-egg activity included not only service users but also staff members and families attending the event. It helped create an informal atmosphere and a sense that “we are one family.”
Traditional Water-Pouring Ceremony: Preserving Thai Culture and Sharing Auspicious Blessings
KIN Rehab values the preservation of Thai culture and therefore organised a traditional water-pouring ceremony for elders to express respect, receive blessings, and continue a meaningful custom.
1. Preserving Meaningful Thai Values
The ceremony is more than pouring water. It conveys respect, gratitude, and the tradition of receiving blessings from elders, creating a positive and meaningful experience for both those giving and receiving the gesture.
2. Giving Older Adults a Meaningful Role
Older adults in a center may sometimes feel that their social role has changed. During the ceremony, they become “respected elders”, which may strengthen pride, personal value, and emotional well-being.
3. Strengthening Relationships Between Staff and Service Users
When staff members and service users share a meaningful cultural ceremony, it can strengthen trust and warm interpersonal relationships—an important foundation for person-centred, holistic rehabilitation.
KIN Rehab and the Idea That “Well-Being Begins With a Happy Heart”
This year’s Songkran programme was designed not only for enjoyment and cultural celebration, but also to support holistic physical, emotional, and social rehabilitation.
-
Physical Well-Being: Activities encourage movement, hand use, coordination, or response practice according to each participant’s ability.
-
Emotional Well-Being: Shared laughter and smiles may provide valuable encouragement and motivation during rehabilitation.
-
Social Well-Being: Building relationships with others helps participants feel connected and “not alone”.
Reflections From Participants
“I normally do not get many opportunities to go out, but activities like this are enjoyable and let me talk with other people. For a while, I could take my mind off being unwell.” – Somchai, a post-operative rehabilitation participant
“The bingo activity made it feel like home. There was laughter and companionship, and it gave us wonderful encouragement.” – Ladda, a caregiver
This Songkran, KIN Rehab organised activities not only for enjoyment, but also to give each experience meaning through movement, emotional support, and stronger connections within the center’s community.
Because we believe that
“Good health does not begin with the body alone—it also begins with a happy heart.”
KIN Rehab thanks everyone who took part and looks forward to creating more smiles through future activities.
